Myanmar
(formerly Burma) is a country, the size of France, with 45 million inhabitants.
Although it is a country rich in natural resources, the people are desperately
poor. There is a military government, which ignored the result of the recent
democratic elections and refused to hand over power.
The
population are from 21 major ethnic groups. The majority are Buddhists but there
are Christians, Muslims and Hindus. The Anglican Church in Myanmar is split into
6 Dioceses.
The
normal clergy stipend is about £3 a month. Clergy often take in orphans and
elderly people so that an average clergy household is 14 people. The staple diet
in Myanmar is rice and 14 people need about 3 bags of rice a month.
Rice costs £2 a bag.
The
borders of Myanmar were closed between 1966 and 1987 and it is still quite
difficult to get in, this means that it is difficult to support the church there
except through prayer. However one practical way that has become possible is to
send money for rice for Burmese Clergy.
